What Are Goji Berries?

Goji berries, scientifically known as Lycium barbarum, are also known as wolfberries, fructus lyciiand gougizi. These dried red berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years and constitute its inseparable element. In Asian countries they are used as an important component of a healthy diet, being a source of many nutritional compounds including carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and polysaccharide compounds. In recent years, these berries have also become increasingly popular in Europe and America. The results of many studies indicate that the polysaccharide complex of Goji berries is one of the main nutrients of the fruit, the consumption of which shows multidirectional health-promoting effects on the human body.

Read on for 6 evidence-based health benefits of goji berries:

Among the many isolated chemical compounds of Goji berries, the best known constituents are a group of water-soluble glycoconjugates called the polysaccharide complex (LBP, from Lycium barbarum polysaccharides).
Goji fruits owe their red-orange colour to the presence of a group of carotenoids, whose content varies between 0.03-0.5 % of the dry fruit weight. The predominant carotenoid is zeaxanthin, found mainly in the form of zeaxanthin dipalmitate. It accounts for approximately 31-56 % of the total carotenoid pool.
Essential oils and fatty acids have also been identified in Goji berries. The most abundant compounds of both groups are mainly: hexadecanoic acid, linoleic acid, myristic acid, β-elemene and ethyl hexadecanoate.
Goji fruits also contain in their composition 1-2.7 % of free amino acids, of which proline is the most abundant. In addition, the presence of taurine-a non-protein amino acid.
Besides, these berries are a source of minerals, mainly zinc, copper, iron, calcium, selenium and phosphorus, as well as many vitamins, especially B1, B2, B6 and E. Additionally, the presence of 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid, an analogue of vitamin C, as well as organic acids: malic, citric, fumaric and szikimic have been identified.
Goji berries are a rich source of polyphenolic compounds, among which the most numerous group are flavonoids, especially the flavonols: kemferol, quercetin and myricetin. They account for 43% of the total flavonoid content.
